A large lidded garbage can makes an excellent storage container for pet supplies. Supplies can also be stored in a pet's crate/kennel. Make a copy of this checklist and tape it to the inner lid of the storage container for reference.

• Water: A three-seven day supply. A 10 lb. animal needs about one quart of water per day; a 40 lb. animal needs about one gallon of water per day.
• Food: A three-seven day supply. Food should be rotated every two months to ensure freshness. Don't forget an extra can opener if using canned food.
• Kennel/crate for housing: For dogs, it should be large enough to stand up and turn around and include food/water bowls. For cats it should be large enough to include a small litter pan along with food/water bowls. There are a wide variety of crates available; some are completely collapsible and take up very little space--check pet supply stores and pet supply catalogs. Label the crate with name, address and phone number.
• Newspaper to line crates and blankets/towels for bedding and to cover the crate during transport.
• Kitty litter and small litter boxes. (Shallow cardboard boxes work well. A litter pan can also be made by stapling/taping several layers of newspaper at the corners to form a shallow pan.)
• Leashes/collars with extra I.D. tags; tags should include owner's name, address, phone number and an out of state number for emergency contact. If a pet regularly takes medication (diabetes, heart disease, epilepsy, etc.) it should be noted on an additional I.D. tag. If your pet has a tattoo/microchip please note it.
• Booties for dogs to help keep feet warm and protect against broken glass, etc.
• Plastic bags, paper towels & pooper scoopers for waste cleanup. Ziplock bag(s) to store your pet's photos, paperwork, medication(s).
• Current photos of pet--include distinguishing markings (these details can also be written on the back of the photo, along with age/breed/sex/spayed/neutered info.)
• Copies of medical records--especially current vaccinations. Proof of current rabies vaccination is important for public health/safety. Your pet should be current on all vaccinations for its won health/safety, and boarding facilities may not take pets without this information. If you are unsure about your pet's vaccination status, contact your veterinarian. If you have pet medical insurance, include a copy of your policy.
• Extra medication (at least 2 weeks' supply) if your pet regularly takes medication, along with instructions for administering medication.
• Muzzle or a roll of gauze bandage that can be used as a muzzle in case your dog becomes agitated and aggressive during the confusion. Even the most gentle animal can bite when hurt and/or frightened. Your veterinarian can instruct you on the safe use of a muzzle.
• Toys/treats: Just like children, pets can gain comfort with the distraction of a favorite toy or treat. Even including an old unwashed shirt with your scent on it can be a comfort if your pet is being cared for by strangers.

Make a copy of this checklist and tape it to your bird cage for reference.

• Water: 1/3-1/2 gallon per day for large birds' drinking, bathing. also include a bottle of electrolyte solution (i.e., Pedialyte) and a bottle of fruit juice if your bird drinks juice.
• Clean dry spray bottles (1 for cleaning, 1 for misting the bird).
• Food: 3-7 days' supply. Pelleted diets, dried fruits/veggies/pastas/seeds will all keep well. There are many prepackaged bird snacks on the market. Breeders will want to include instant hand-feeding formula and dry weaning food. Remember to rotate supplies to keep them fresh. Include bird vitamins.
• Syringes for hand feeding.
• Garbage bags, paper towels and bird safe disinfectant (i.e. Nolvasan solution, or a 1:20 dilution of bleach:water--watch that birds don't ingest the bleach solution).
• Portable cage/cage cover: There are collapsible models available advertised in magazines such as Bird Talk. An airline kennel will also work well. Acrylic cages with carry handles are also available. A cate cover can be as simple as an old sheet. A blanket is preferred if transportating the bird in cold weather. Label the cage as specified in the dog/cat section.
• Clean towels: In case you need to wrap your bird for handling/exam/treatment.
• Newspapers or other cage liner.
• Photos of your bird (write description on the back), microchip I.D. number if applicable, extra medicines, copies of pet insurance policy.
• Cage toys: Birds are sensitive creatures and toys may provide comfort and a welcome distraction.

Don't forget to prepare your larger animals for a disaster.

• Water: The average horse consumes 8-10 gallons of water per day; have at least a 48 hour supply available.
• Hay/grain: Enough for a 48 hour period. Try to keep your horse's diet consistent as abrupt diet changes can lead to colic.
• Extra halter with name, address, phone number, and emergency contact; extra leads.
• Leg wraps.
• Copies of current immunizations; photos (front, rear, left and right sides). Description of horse, noting any tattoos, microchips, distinguishing marks, age, sex, breed and color.
• Basic first aid supplies (i.e., Silvadene cream, Betadine solution).

Supply Checklist for Rabbits, Pocket Pets & Ferrets

• Water as described for other species. Extra water bottles and tube sippers if used.
• Food as described for other species. Rotate a supply of mixed grass hay for rabbits.
• Airline crate/hutch (rabbits) or aquarium.
• Newspaper or other bedding.
• Cleaning supplies (see above).
• Ferrets should have proof of rabies vaccination. Ferrets should also be current on their distemper vaccination--this disease is fatal in ferrets.
• As for other species, keep current photographs.

• Water: Three-seven days worth for soaking and misting. Certain species (chameleons) only drink water if it is misted/dripped on leaves. Your veterinarian may be able to provide an IV bag and tubing to construct a drip system.
• Food: Certain species of reptiles can eat prepared diets. Other species rely on fresh/frozen prey items. It may not be possible to store food for your reptile, especially if you're without electricity.
• Small aquarium/kennel for transport.
• Newspaper for cage liner. Paper towels, garbage bags & disinfectant (see bird section).
• Pillowcase for transporting snakes.
• Cardboard boxes for hide boxes in aquarium.
• Styrofoam cooler to keep pets cool.
• Spare full spectrum lights & heat lamps. Keep in mind that electricity may be off.
• Empty plastic jugs: Can serve as a heat source if the power is off (providing you have access to heated water).
• Pictures/descriptions of your reptiles. Include handling instructions--some disaster workers may not be familiar with handling reptiles.
