FEMA

Federal Emergency Management Agency has a comprehensive emergency management training program. FEMA provides emergency management training in three ways: resident courses at Emmitsburg, MD, independent study, and FEMA developed courses conducted by states.

Emergency Management Institute (EMI)

Eligibility

Any Alaska resident with substantial involvement in emergency management can apply for training at National Fire Academy (NFA) at Emmitsburg, MD.

Fax your completed applications to 907-428-7009, attn: Dale Crum. You can also mail your application to him at: Division of Emergency Services, P.O. Box 5750, Fort Richardson, AK 99505-5750.

Enrollment Policy

NFA divides the academic year into two semesters: Winter (Oct-Mar) and Summer (Apr-Sep). Each semester has a separate application period.

Winter Semester Application Period: 1 May-30 Jun.

Summer Semester Application Period:1 Nov-31 Dec.

Independent Study Program

A good source for self-paced courses designed for the general public and people who have emergency management responsibilities.

Independent Study Program (ISP) materials are available to all. However, only US citizens can enroll and receive credit for course completion.

Professional Development Series (PDS)

FEMA created the PDS curriculum to help emergency managers develop key skills and abilities necessary for managing all-hazard disasters and emergencies. To receive credit for completion of the FEMA PDS Series, students must complete all seven courses listed below.

Professional Development Series

Integrated Emergency Management Course

The IEMC is a 4.5 day exercise based training activity that places public officials and emergency personnel in a realistic crisis situation within a structured learning environment. 

The IEMC National Open Enrollment System has two open enrollment periods for resident IEMC programs at EMI and Mt. Weather. During each of the open enrollment periods all potential students from all regions of the country are eligible to apply. For more information, please visit:

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Because emergency responders may not be able to meet the demands for their services during a disaster, FEMA developed a CERT training program. Intent of the program is to train selected first responders as CERT instructors for their community.

National Fire Academy

NFA offers resident and self-study training courses for fire and emergency services professionals. NFA offers both resident and self-study courses.

National Interagency Civil-Military Institute (NICI)

NICI is part of the National Guard Bureau and is located in San Luis Obispo, CA. NICI provides tuition-free training to emergency management professionals and civic leaders on anti-terrorism and domestic military support capabilities. Participants pay their own travel expenses.
